Black Silk by Sharon Page

Maryanne Hamilton had expected to be shocked, but the wanton orgy she finds in Mrs. Master’s salon makes her wonder if she has walked into hell. Desperate to escape, she comes upon the master of sin himself – Lord Swansborough. Fascinated by his nakedness, she longs to touch every inch of his long, hard body. And when he bid her come near, she quickly surrenders to his wicked promises of carnal pleasure and sensual ecstasy…

Black Silk by Sharon Page is the second in the trilogy about Rodesson’s daughters. As the sequel to Sin, we see a return of a few characters and the novels flow really well together. Still this must be looked at as standing on its own.
Black Silk is named so because Lord Swansborough (Dashiel Lancelot Blackmore) dresses in entirely black. At first I thought it was because his cravat was black silk but as I read it’s a lot more than one piece of clothing that is black.
The plot of the story is that Maryanne sneaks out to go to an address where her friend and partner, Georgiana, sent a note saying she was in trouble. Maryanne charges to her rescue only to find herself in the middle of an orgy and an erotic scavenger hunt. In the middle of trying to escape she finds herself accidently locked in a room with Swansborough. She had fantasized about him since meeting him at a ton ball. She spends the night with him and three months later realizes that she’s pregnant. She admits what happened and ends up married to him. There is an adventure that brings them closer together and in love, and the story ends happily.
It’s hard to describe so succinctly what this book is about. There is murder and a plot to frame Dashiel. But there is so much more involved with a Sharon Page book that wrapping it up that neatly seems wrong somehow. The characters are described well and the plot wraps around the flaws of the characters which somehow make you think that you could walk into London and actually meet these people. It makes them relatable and it makes you cheer for their outcomes. In Sin Lord Swansborough was a dastardly rake who seemed dangerous with a penchant for very dark and perverse pleasures but in Black Silk he seemed more like a haunted man who wanted to lose himself in pleasure to forget the horrors of his past.
As always Sharon Page knows her sex scenes. She has a delightful mind that comes up with fantastical ways to make the reader wet (I know I was) with the arousing and stimulating sex scenes. Calling it simply an erotic novel seems sinful…like there should be a better word. I particularly like the scene where Dashiel and Maryanne have to go up in a hot air balloon and have sex so that those below can hear it. It was great because everybody knew what happened even though they didn’t get to see it.
There was a particular quote that I wanted to share from the book. “They could die in an orgasm that would leave a man drained and limp and within seconds happily start bouncing toward their next explosion.” This was in reference to women being able to handle multiple orgasms while a man rarely is able to go two times in a row without some sort of break. While true I had never seen it stated quite that way before.
Overall I say this book is worth investing the time and effort into reading. It’s not a difficult read but the darkness of tone makes it a little harsh sometimes. The sex is definitely worth reading and the way that the characters develop make you want to know what happens to them next. In the end I am happy to give Black Silk 4.25 stars.
